Frequently Asked Questions

National / General

What is workplace rehabilitation, and how can it help injured workers?

Workplace rehabilitation is a structured process led by allied health professionals to help injured workers safely and sustainably return to work. It combines medical care, psychological support, and tailored workplace strategies to rebuild capacity and match duties to the worker’s abilities. For a more in-depth understanding, see our comprehensive guide to workplace rehabilitation.

What is a workplace rehabilitation provider?

A workplace rehab provider assists both injured workers and employers with the return to work process, by developing treatment plans, providing regular updates, and engaging with the company’s return to work programs.

The goal of rehab providers is to support the worker’s recovery while ensuring they can perform their duties effectively and without risk of further injury.

Our blog article discusses this in more detail: Workplace Rehabilitation Providers: What Exactly Do They Do?

How quickly can I return to work after an injury?

Return-to-work timelines vary, but AusRehab’s 8-step rehabilitation process typically supports a safe return within weeks. Early engagement begins within two weeks of injury, followed by a tailored plan and gradual reintegration through reduced duties. The program concludes once the worker achieves a stable and sustainable role.

How does the workplace rehabilitation process work?

While everyone’s recovery journey is uniquely different, refer to our blog article for an overview of what to expect: The 8 Steps of the Work Rehabilitation Process.

Typically, a work rehab provider is appointed if the employee has not recovered from the workplace injury within 2 weeks. Engaging a rehab provider in a timely manner reduces time loss and prevents a delayed return to work.

Can I take leave while on workers compensation?

Annual leave can be taken during workers compensation in New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

In most states, employees get paid for both the annual leave and workers compensation.

In New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia annual leave will accrue during workers compensation if the employee would have otherwise been entitled to the accrual had they not been on workers compensation.

Can I choose my own workplace rehabilitation provider?

As an injured worker, you have the final say in choosing a workplace rehabilitation provider.

Ensure you choose a work rehab provider that is suitable for you.

How can I change my rehab provider to AusRehab?

Choosing the right work rehab provider ensures your rehabilitation needs are met.

To switch your rehab provider, your insurer needs documentation explaining the reasons for the new choice.

After sending this to the insurer, share a copy of the documentation with your employer and AusRehab. Our team will then contact the insurer.

If the insurer doesn’t approve the change, you can raise the issue with SafeWork NSW at 13 10 50.

As an employer, why should I engage a workplace rehabilitation provider?

An Ernst & Young study has shown that timely appointment of a work rehab provider not only improves Return to Work (RTW) outcomes, but also significantly reduces claims costs.

This means a reduction in time loss, productivity loss and employee turnover rate.

How will the injured worker’s health be managed?

An injured worker’s recovery process is continuously monitored and managed by a dedicated support team.

This team consists of the worker’s employer, the insurer, the nominated treating doctor (NTD), allied health professionals, and the workplace rehabilitation provider.

This team coordinates efforts to assess the worker’s health and capacity for work, ensuring a smooth recovery and return to work.

Workers injured on the job or during work-related duties in NSW—including full-time, part-time, casual employees, contractors (in some cases), apprentices, and trainees—are generally eligible for fully funded workplace rehabilitation under the NSW workers compensation scheme. Eligibility is confirmed once the insurer accepts the claim and approves the services as reasonably necessary.
